Meanings of the Four of Wands

The Four of Wands Minor Arcana card is one of celebration and festivities, of gathering our clan and enjoying the simple moments. It is traditionally said to denote parties such as weddings, as the Pamela Colman Smith image depicts, but it is also wise to remember that the wedding is not the marriage!

Read on for a full Tarot card description including its Astrological and Numerological correspondences as well as what it can mean if it shows up for you as a reversal and in a general, career, or love reading:

Four of Wands Tarot Card Meanings

After the progress of the Three of Wands, we have reached a plateau and level stage where we can rest a while, embrace what we have achieved, and celebrate our successes!

The Four of Wands card is about looking for the pockets of joy that brighten up our day, in spending small, sweet moments with family and friends, and in finding cause for celebration in life itself.

We can see that the figures in the Smith Rider Waite Tarot deck appear to be at a wedding, celebrating a moment of joy. They are in front of the town with their community in the background, and they are dressed in true blue and powerful red.

While generally the Four of Wands is a welcome card of comfort, belonging, safety, joy, community, happiness, and security, it is also a stage card.

In this is where I’m reminded that the wedding is not the marriage, we are still but at a four here, we have a long way to go yet in the suit! When stage cards show up in the Tarot it is a reminder that things may not always be as they seem, or to look a little deeper- don’t mistake the highlight reel for the real deal (we are also going to meet some disruption in the next card)!

The colour of the sky is warm, golden yellow, often being representative of wisdom, spirituality, and creativity.

The four wands have also grown even bigger in comparison to the Three, we have accomplished more and can feel a greater sense of satisfaction.

Four of Wands Upright Card Keywords

Joy, contentment, community, success, happiness, belonging, satisfaction, celebration.

An upright Four of Wands Tarot card indicates a time for us to simply appreciate what moments of familial bliss we have, an invitation to gather up your loved ones and spend joyous moments together- find cause for celebration and feeling into a sense of accomplishment.

Astrologically, the Four of Wands corresponds to Venus in Aries, where it is detrimented. This is another call back to the potential warnings of this card for me, don’t get lured into the seductive allure of blissful fantasy. As the Planet of sweetness, connection, and social niceties, it can struggle in the forthright brashness of Aries, be careful when you play with fire! Venus in Aries is also a reminder to me of needing to actively go after what you want!

Numerologically, the fours represent structure, stability, and material reality- the four elements and cardinal directions. It is a number of safety and security, sturdy like the legs of a table or walls of a house- just make sure it doesn’t become stagnant like a prison.

This also connects it to The Emperor, seat of our power. The Emperor is the embodiment of healthy ego and leadership, they are a call to enlist bold action and the ability to take up aligned space. Own your happiness.

The Four of Wands Reversed

If you choose to read reversals, a reversed Four of Wands could indicate a pessimistic mindset or inability to see the forest for all the trees. Sometimes it takes an outside perspective or shift in viewpoint to see how much we have to celebrate! Don’t resist giving yourself this gift, you deserve it.

Four of Wands in a Relationships Reading

In a love reading the Four of Wands can represent a welcome card indeed! Again, it is really important to remember that this is not the be-all-and-end-all. Appreciate the love and companionship you have in this moment, and don’t forget the cycle is still long.

Four of Wands in a Career Reading

In a career reading, the Four of Wands can be a message to bring some levity to your workplace or business mindset, to stop and pat yourself on your back for all your hard work! Appreciate all that you’ve achieved, celebrate your wins, and find cause for celebration amongst your team.
