The Seven of Wands Meaning

The Seven of Wands Minor Arcana card is one of perseverance, determination, and sticking to our guns. It is a reminder to stay true to our values and keep on fighting for our corner. Follow on from the victory of the Six of Wands, I am also reminded to reflect upon what happened here, why have the tides suddenly turned against us?

Read on for a full Tarot card description including its Astrological and Numerological correspondences as well as what it can mean if it shows up for you as a reversal and in a general, career, or love Tarot reading:

Seven of Wands Tarot Card Meanings

Following the camaraderie, success, and victory of the Six of Wands, here we are confronted with a band of unknown aggressors, left to fend for ourselves.

The figure in the Smith Rider Waite Tarot deck has been caught off guard as their differring shoes suggest, and they literally have “the higher ground” position. So what happened here?

Taking each card as a continuation of the story, to me this card can sometimes indicate that the pompousness and loudness of Jupiter in Leo in the Six of Wands caused us to toot our horns a little too loudly, things may have gone to our head, and now people have turned against us.

Perhaps there is something to be said in the number of the others, at some point when does everyone else stop being wrong?

However, it is also a tale as old as time for us to build up the underdog only to tear them down again, reiterated by the higher ground of the figure.

Thus, when this card shows up I am generally reminded to stay true to myself and keep on fighting for my corner, with a gentle check-in as to whether some humble pie is in order or if this is even a battle worth fighting for.

Seven of Wands Upright Keywords

Fighting our corner, sticking to our guns, staying true to ourselves, checking in its worth it

Generally, an upright Seven of Wands is an encouragement to keep on going and not give up. You may need to defend yourself against surprise unknown assailants, but you have the higher ground- keep going.

Sometimes this card can show up when we are battling against ourselves, perhaps deciding whether to give up or keep going. In this case it can be worth knowing when it is truly best to quit, and when we need to call upon our grit instead.

It may be a particularly busy period in life where things feel like they just keep coming at us.

Astrologically, this is a Mars in Leo card, reiterating its fiery nature. Mars is hot and fast, the warrior Planet; Leo is Fixed Fire, a persevering burning (or burning out). Mars in Leo is bold, creative actions as well as the potential for flair, drama, or exaggeration. Don’t overheat! Expend your energy generously and soothe with playfulness.

Numerologically, the 7s are spiritual numbers of questioning. This is where I believe the check-in comes in with the notions of if it’s really worth it and if we really do have the higher ground. Perhaps we need to go back to the Six and share in the victory again, or perhaps once we have endured enough we can get the quick breakthroughs of the Eight.

This also connects it to The Chariot, the card of perseverance and endurance. The Chariot is about keeping on trucking on up that hill, having the faith that we are almost there and can do it. As the “Chariot” and not the “Charioteer”, it is also about checking in with whether we are going about things in the most efficient way. Are there old layers or containers we’ve outgrown and need to shed (like its Astrological counterpart, Cancer)?

The Seven of Wands Reversed Meaning

If you choose to read reversals, a reversed Seven of Wands card could either be a stronger message to not give up and keep on sticking up for yourself- only you can advocate for yourself after all; or a message to lay down your wands a moment and check that you really are in the “right” or that it’s worth it before getting worked up for nothing.

Seven of Wands in a Relationships Reading

In a love reading the Seven of Wands can represent the feeling of needing to defend oneself, if this is the case, checking in with any sense of guilt and why can by useful. It can also be an invitation to stay true to yourself and values and not back down.

In a career reading, the Seven of Wands can be a message to defend yourself in some way, to be proactive in your ambitions and goals, to keep on persevering and not get deflated or demoralised. It can also be an invitation to check in that you are not getting yourself worked up into a corner for no reason.
