What To Know About Archetypal Pisces
Archetypal Pisces is the mystic and dreamer of the Zodiac. Coming at the end of the cycle before a new one begins, it is the liminal womb space, containing elements of all that have come before it— both wise and naive at once, the ability to build its own reality.
Its traditional ruling Planet is benevolent Jupiter, the expansive Planet of hope, faith, and trust—qualities Pisces has a lot of! Here it is able to call upon its full spectrum of generosity, spirituality, and belief in the process.
As a Mutable Water Sign, it is the most fluid and flexible of all, drifting and floating with its ethereal tides. Pisces operates on another plane, beyond the constructs of time and space. Where it is in your Natal Chart can show you areas where you need boundaries, empathy, and to go with the flow.

Characteristics of Pisces
Pisces is a Nocturnal, Mutable Water Sign. Nocturnal Signs (Earth + Water) are more receptive and inward-facing. Mutable Signs fall at the end of the seasons, thus are adaptable and changeable (Pisces, occurring not only at the end of the season but also the whole Astrological year is the most flexible of all). Water Signs are the feelers and healers of the Zodiac.
Archetypal Pisces is connected to a Universal oneness, it is boundaryless and seamlessly able to put itself in other people’s shoes. This selflessness and desire to ease the suffering of the world can lead to martyrdom and/or being taken advantage of. Its intuitive and perceptive sensitivities can reach psychic levels, but it can also act like an energetic sponge. In this, overwhelm and escapism are possible.
It feels so deeply and yet can be passive, which can lead to avoidance. Substances and other disassociation tactics (such as daydreaming, art, music, scrolling, shopping, sex, fantasy novels, gaming etc.) are favourite support mechanisms. While it is highly imaginative, it can also be fantastical, idealistic, puritanical, or gullible.
Ultimately, Pisces seeks a deep soul union and to return to Universal oneness, to float in a realm of its own making, and connect to the collective unconscious and all living beings around it (often preferring the more than human world).
Its ruling body part is the feet (able to swim far), as well as some say the pituitary (which secretes melatonin, necessary for sleep— often elusive to Pisces) or pineal (often called the seat of our intuition) gland.
Its symbol is the two fish strung together in an endless swirl of embrace. This is sometimes likened to Aphrodite (Venus) and her son Eros (Cupid) trying to escape Typhon by turning themselves into fish and tying themselves together to not get lost.
The Planets and Pisces
As Astrology is the study of the Planets, it can be useful to think about a Zodiac Sign through which Planets are comfortable and at home in them, and which ones struggle in their domain.
Pisces is traditionally ruled by Jupiter, God of Gods. Zeus straight up likes to have a good time, it is benevolent, amplifying, and warm natured. It has an expansive influence that deals with justice, morals, equality, and law, as well as religion, spirituality, and faith. It also loves a party ;)
Jupiter is of the day “Sect”, known as the “greater benefic”— in relation to Venus— its temperament is hot and moist, the largest Planet in the solar system is able to bring good fortune and abundance when well-placed. Jupiter can also have a more-is-more attitude, this is go-big-or-go-home energy, maximalism to the max.
Jupiter finds its so-called “joy” in the 11th House of Friendship, the “House of Good Spirit”. This is traditionally the community, networks, groups, memberships, alliances, and aspirations— those things that can lift us up and lend a supportive hand.
Venus exalts in Pisces, which is just so fitting. The Planet of sweetness, connection, and love being exalted in the Sign of romance, union, and art is an obvious match. Here Venus is fully able to call upon its poetic charm.
As Mercury is both the ruler of and exalted in Virgo, it finds both its detriment and fall in Pisces, the Sign opposite. This is the only Planet/Sign combination to be doubly debilitated. Mercury is the Planet of facts, figures, data, and analytics, it can struggle in the nonlinear imagination of big-picture Pisces! Here, timekeeping and organisation skills may not be its forté, but dreaming up new worlds and speaking directly to the soul is!

The Planets in Pisces
The Zodiac Seasons are governed by where the Sun currently is in the Zodiac belt (which is a division of the ecliptic— the apparent path of the Sun— into twelve equal Signs). When it is in the Sign of Pisces, we are collectively in Pisces Season.
This usually occurs roughly between the 19th February - 20th March but depends on the day of the Vernal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere each year (which starts the Astrological cycle and is what the Tropical Zodiac Signs are based on— not the constellations as is commonly thought!), the Sun spending roughly 30 days in each Sign thereafter, moving 1º a day.
In the Northern Hemisphere (which “Western” Astrology is developed on), Pisces Season is the end of winter. This is when the first whispers of Spring— and therefore hope!— are available on the horizon. We have made it through the Winter, and another year, and can now prepare to begin again.
Pisces Season
During Pisces Season is a time when we are beginning to come out of our winter slumbers, shaking off the stiffness of hibernation, and starting to let our dreams of potential soar. We began the year planning with Capricorn Season and then getting into the groove with Aquarius Season, and now with Spring just around the corner we are beginning to get our zest for life back.
This is the perfect time to let your imagination run wild and pay attention to where your dreams take you. Allow your daydreams to guide the way! Tap into your spirituality and sense of faith in the Universe. Connect deeply with others, make love and art.

Of course, no Planet can be taken in isolation when reading a Birth Chart for a personality analysis (the Sun in Pisces conjunct Saturn in an Aries Rising Chart, for example, will have significantly different connotations!), but here is a brief overview of the Planets in Pisces (which will also influence the Houses they rule— for example if you have the Moon in Pisces this also speaks to your Cancer House)!
Sun in Pisces
The Sun in Pisces is intuitive, creative, and empathetic. It is able to deeply connect with others, its imagination, and dreamscape. Sensitive and caring, it has the capacity to get along with a wide variety of people and envision a new world.

Moon in Pisces
The Moon in Aquarius is highly intuitive and sensitive— strong boundaries are essential! This is a very caring and altruistic placement but can be prone to emotional overwhelm leading to avoidance or escapism. Allow ample time for “conscious” spacing out.
Mercury in Pisces
Mercury in Pisces is imaginative, creative, and fluid, able to dream up new world but potentially struggling with typical left-brained activities. If attention to detail or timekeeping is an issue— outsource! You’ve got hearts and souls to connect to.
Venus in Pisces
Venus in Pisces is deeply romantic, seeking a perfect soul union. It is attracted to mysticism, spirituality, and poetic creations. Venus is particularly strong here, able to amp up its charm and connective capacities. Make love and art.
Mars in Pisces
Mars in Pisces is fluid, intuitive actions. It is typically more of a lover than a fighter, and can prefect to receive and go with the flow, rather than initiate. If passivity or avoidance are present, remember that we can be both candid and kind.
Jupiter in Pisces
Jupiter in Pisces is strongly able to call upon its capacity for generosity, faith, and expansion. It is highly spiritual here, able to lean into its inherent trust that things will always work out. It also has a strong concept of right and wrong!
Where it is in your Chart can also speak to your Sagittarius placements/ Houses.
Saturn in Pisces
Saturn in Pisces can go both ways— either being a staunch skeptic, or devout believer. It can lead to religious fanaticism, strict faith, or difficulty in accessing its spirituality altogether. It can also struggle with typical “reality”— what’s really real and what’s not?
As another social Planet, along with Jupiter, people born within the same 2-3 years as you will have Saturn in Pisces— you can look to other placements for more personalised details (such as the House it is in, what aspects it is making, and the Capricorn/Aquarius House/placements of your Chart).

Pisces in the Astrological Houses
In each of our Natal Charts, Pisces will occupy a House (regardless of whether you have placements in Pisces or not), bringing its desire for connection, flow, and potential enmeshment to this area of life for us.
-> When a Planet enters Pisces, it is transiting this House for us, bringing its energy/action to this area of life (this is also how all horoscopes are written)! To learn more about what the Planets have in store for you, get your Year Ahead Forecast!
